Senate bill funds study of secret Utah Societies

SALT LAKE CITY--The attorney general's office could get $750,000 to investigate abuses in polygamy and other secret societies under a bill that passed the Utah Senate on Friday.

The Money would be used to assist local prosecutors and law enforcement agencies in investigating incest, sexual abuse, failure to pay child support and tax and welfare fraud in secretive societies, including polygamists, separationists and isolationists.

Senate Bill 99, sponsored by Sen. Ron Allen, D-Stansbury Park, was approved 18-8, despite opposition by some members who did not want to allocate more money to the attorney general.
